The 30-second guide

Watch first. Read after.

Our doctors recorded a quick visual walkthrough so you can see exactly how it's done before reading the full step-by-step.

Before you start

What you need on hand.

Wash and dry your hands

Soap and water for 20 seconds. Dry with a clean towel before handling supplies.

Bring medication to room temperature

Cold oil-based medication is harder to draw and stings on injection. Leave it out 15–20 minutes.

Lay out your supplies

Vial, drawing needle, injecting needle, syringe, two alcohol pads, gauze, sharps container — open and within reach.

Open your sharps container

Have it within arm's reach with the lid open. Used needles go straight in — never recap.

Choose your injection site

Rotate sites week to week. Your prescriber's notes specify intramuscular vs subcutaneous — follow them.

Inspect the vial and the medication

Liquid should be clear. If it's cloudy, discoloured, or you see particles, do not use it — message your clinician.

The step-by-step

Five steps, repeated weekly.

Each step has a short visual reference. If anything feels off, stop and message your clinician before proceeding.

Draw the dose

Wipe the vial top with an alcohol pad. Pull air into the syringe equal to your dose, then inject the air into the vial — this prevents a vacuum.

Invert the vial and slowly draw your prescribed dose. Tap to release any air bubbles, then push them back into the vial before disconnecting.

02

Prep the site

Wipe the injection site in a single outward circular motion with a fresh alcohol pad. Let it air-dry for 10–15 seconds — injecting wet pads will sting.

03

Inject

Insert the needle at the angle your prescriber specified — 90° for intramuscular, 45° for subcutaneous. Push the plunger slowly and steadily, around 10 seconds per mL.

Keep the needle in for a few seconds after the dose is delivered to stop backflow.

Withdraw and dispose

Remove the needle at the same angle, press gauze over the site for 30 seconds. Drop the entire syringe and needle straight into the sharps container — do not recap.

Log the date, dose, and site in your tracker so you can rotate sites cleanly next time.

When to call your clinician

Red flags — don't push through.

Most injections are uneventful. If any of the below happen, message your treating clinician through the patient portal before your next dose.

Persistent pain or hardness at the site

Mild soreness for 24 hours is normal. Pain that lasts longer, hardness, or warmth that spreads — message your clinician.

Redness or swelling expanding from the site

A small bump is normal. A red patch larger than a coin, or spreading redness — could be infection. Stop and message us.

Fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms

If you develop a fever within 48 hours of injecting, do not inject again until you've spoken with your clinician.

Suspected wrong dose or wrong vial

If you've drawn the wrong volume or used the wrong vial, do not inject again to "make up" for it. Message us first.

Where to get supplies

Re-stock the right gear.

We don't sell injection supplies directly. These are the Australian suppliers our patients use — pharmacy-grade and delivered to your door.

Primal Zone is not affiliated with these suppliers and does not earn commission. Suppliers listed are based on what our patients commonly report using. Always verify the product matches what your prescriber has specified.
