How to Use Your Weight-Loss Pen

If your treatment comes as a pen — like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro — the injection is one of the simplest parts of all this. The dose is built in, so there's no drawing up and no measuring. It's normal to feel nervous before the first one. Once you've done it, you'll see it's just a few quick steps.

Before you start

• Keep the pen in the fridge in its original box. Once a pen is in use it can also sit out of the fridge below 30°C — the leaflet in the box gives the exact time for your pen (30 days for Mounjaro, 6 weeks for Wegovy).
• Take it out 5–10 minutes early. Room-temperature injections are more comfortable.
• Wash your hands, then have ready: your pen, a new pen needle, an alcohol wipe, gauze, and your sharps container.

The injection in six steps

1. Check the pen. Right medication, in date, and the liquid looks clear.
2. Attach a new needle. Screw on a fresh pen needle and pull off the caps. A new needle every time — they're single-use.
3. Dial your dose. Turn the selector to the dose on your prescription. Usually you'll dial it all the way.
   
   

1. Clean the spot. The belly is easiest — a few centimetres from your belly button, a different spot each time. Wipe and let it dry.
2. Inject. Press the pen flat against the skin and press the button. Hold it there for about 10 seconds so the full dose goes in, then pull straight out.
3. Finish up. Press the spot gently with gauze, unscrew the needle straight into your sharps container (never recap), and put the pen back in the fridge.

Message the care team if

• A reaction at the spot is spreading, hot, or not settling. A small bump is normal.
• Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain that's severe or won't ease off. Mild tummy upset early on is common as your body adjusts.
• You've missed a dose or doubled up — don't try to catch up. Message us and we'll guide you.
• Anything that feels seriously wrong — severe allergic reaction, trouble breathing, intense stomach pain — get medical help first, then let us know.

Supplies

You'll need pen needles that fit your pen and an approved sharps container — pharmacies and Australian medical suppliers stock both. Used needles never go in the household bin; return your sharps container the way your council or pharmacy advises.
